Scope Creep, sounds painful! Take one minute to think of major building projects: any Olympic village, a skyscraper, house extensions. A common thing you hear is, they are late and cost more than expected. This may be fair comment, but look at it from a different viewpoint. Did the objectives change? Did the specifications change? Did the work change to match something that was not foreseen?  Here we are looking at “scope creep”, where the aims change.

Scope creep can be a result of:  Poorly defined objectives at the start  Customers trying to squeeze more from suppliers  poor controls during the project  Weak people running the project  Bad communication So “scope creep”, is a simple idea, but can have terrible effects

Also perhaps, budget re-allocation, new priorities cropping up during the project, changes in personnel, evolving market conditions, stakeholders not truly buying into the project at the outset… it is indeed a scary concept but definitely one that needs to be factored in at the start of a project as a ‘contingency plan’ - in other words, let’s decide what might go wrong, in advance, a build a plan b which we keep up our sleeves just in case. This hopefully helps keep some form of control over the project when things inevitably do change. It also helps with ‘milestones’ those project critical hurdles through which everyone needs to go or the project stops and goes no further.
